ACCESSIBILITY

Producing accessible content
for scholarly journals and books.

We work with scholarly publishers towards compliance with global standards for accessibility.

Scholarly publishers around the world are making changes within their organisations and their workflows to better accommodate authors, readers, and staff, with disabilities. Our accessibility initiatives are centred around producing accessible content for scholarly publishers, and we are also committed to making our own internal technology and our products more accessible.

Accessibility-1
ACCESSIBLE SCHOLARLY CONTENT

Producing accessible content for scholarly publishers

Accessible PDFs for journals and books
We process millions of accessible pages in an automated way, via our centralised pagination system. Our team creates tagged PDFs using industry-standard typesetting software, as part of our XML-first workflows. We are in the process of implementing fully-automated PDF accessibility workflows to produce tagged PDFs, including for STM books.
Accessible images and tables with alt-text

Images and tables form crucial parts of manuscripts. Alt-text is added to these no-text elements within the underlying XML during the conversion process, so accessibility is woven into the workflow from the beginning.

Accessible art for readers with colour vision deficiency
Our team of illustrators and artists create colour palettes that are accessible for people with colour vision deficiency. We redraw and recolour in suitable palettes, using colour to convey meaning in a more inclusive manner.
Compatibility with assistive technology
In order to create a future-proof web experience and ensure that all users, regardless of the technology they use, can access our content effectively, we’re committed to making content compatible with current and future user agents, including assistive technologies.
