Copy Editor – Sciences / Humanities (Freelance, remote)

About the role

We are looking for onshore (US, UK, Canada, and other countries with native English speakers) and offshore (India) freelance copy editors/language editors to join our team. In this remote role, you will work on books and journals in the sciences or humanities, including technical and scientific research, medical and health sciences, and humanities and social sciences. Your work will deliver manuscripts edited to the highest standards, in line with journal and publisher style guides.

What will you do?

• Edit books and journal articles for spelling, grammar, syntax, usage, punctuation, clarity, and nomenclature, ensuring consistency and rephrasing sentences as needed.
• Eliminate redundancies, fix dangling modifiers, and correct errors in parallel structure.
• Ensure consistency in active/passive voice, first/third person usage, and present/past tense.
• Query authors for clarity on ambiguous phrasing and make necessary adjustments to enhance readability and accuracy.
• Edit content to meet guideline-specific requirements (e.g., AMA/APA, abbreviations, rules about numbers, word lists, nomenclature, eponyms).
• Ensure articles meet journal and/or publisher expectations, delivering error-free work.

Essential job requirements

• Proficiency in English at the level of a native speaker of the language.
• Excellent editing skills and a minimum of 2 years of editing experience, particularly in the fields of medical/health sciences, scientific/technical content, and humanities/social sciences.
• Thorough knowledge of AMA/APA guidelines.
• A keen eye for detail and an exceptional ability to ensure clarity and accuracy in edited content.
• A strong ability to manage and prioritise multiple projects efficiently.
• The ability to work independently and as part of a team.
• Someone who is/can be fully compliant with Indian tax laws.
• Educated to a minimum of a Bachelor’s degree level in sciences/humanities.
